The purpose for putting all this information in one place is for you to be able to help yourself in finding the sources that you need to help your grandchildren. Rather it be raising your grandchildren or seeking access to your grandchildren, hopefully we are pointing you in the right direction to be able to help yourself help your grandchildren. After all, it is all about them, not us as grandparents.
August 12, 2006 The U.S. Census Bureau reported the number of children who are being raised in grandparent or other relative headed households increased by more than 222,000 children in just the past 5 years, to an approximate total of 7.6 million in the USA. The data indicated unique families. The data provided results from the 2005 American Community Survey. According to the 2000 census there were a little over 550,000 grandparents raising children.
The purpose of placing this information here is to hopefully allow you to know where and how to start when a problem arises which concerns your grandchildren. We go along day to day thinking everything is wonderful and then all the sudden you are in a place concerned about your grandchildren for whatever the reason. Hopefully the links and information here can allow you to start that "education" that you are going to need to help your grandchildren.
As grandparents raising grandchildren and other kin, we might have unique problems and concerns. Our health is often not great, our financial resources are probably limited, and we wonder if we can do this very important job of raising children at this time of our life. In addition, we may have parents to care for and/or children of our own still at home. Many of our grandchildren have special needs ranging from physical disabilities to emotional problems to learning disabilities to mental and/or developmental delays. We all need the help and support that we can find. Together we can be here for each other and support each other but most of all the children.
Grandparents seeking visitations with their grandchildren are part of our group and concerns as well. After all it is about the children, their safety, happiness and wellbeing. If you are a responsible grandparent who has or has had an extensive relationship with your grandchild/ren, and have standing to file for visitations, then here is where you can find the laws and articles to help you achieve your goal for the best interest of the children.
